So where does all of this leave you with regard to how you think about schooling, education, and their purposes? Note: Here I am particularly interested in how/whether this course has helped you to think about where your ideas about school and education come from and whether they have changed.

Blanca Maldonado- This course made me think more about where my ideas about school and education actually come from. I realized that much of what I believe was shaped by the movies, shows, and stories I grew up with, not just by my own experiences. Looking at how pop culture shows school helped me see how those images affect what I expect school to be like. Because of that, my view of education has changed. I now see it as something shaped by the culture around us, not just what happens in a classroom.
ReplyDeleteNadia- This course brought to light all of the movies and tv shows that I have watched that relate to education that i had not even thought about. Schools are impacted by the world around them, and its fascinating to see how education develops over 50 years or so with entertainment and books (books are also entertaining). Going into a teaching career, I will be more mindful of the things we teach children, but also observe how things change throughout the years.
ReplyDeleteseniece - Before this course, I thought school was just about learning facts and getting grades. But now I see that education is shaped by a lot more, by culture, media, and the expectations we carry with us. The shows, movies, and books I grew up with influenced how I imagined school and even how I judged teachers and students. Thinking about it this way makes me realize that education isn’t just a classroom experience, it’s connected to the world around us and the stories we consume. That has changed how I see learning and its purpose.
ReplyDeleteDakota C - This course honestly just confirmed what I already knew about education and how it is portrayed in media. However, it was really interesting seeing the different types of education and classrooms and how are portrayed in film and TV, and made me think more about stereotypes in classrooms.
ReplyDeleteHanna- I found myself very interest in learning how education was portrayed in media. All the lectures and discussions I thought made great for class interaction thus learning other people's experience with their education. Going forward I'm taking what I learned in this class to think critically when I go to do my masters in art education. I wanna engage with more education classes like this in the future.
ReplyDeleteKennedy- This class has really showed me how schooling is viewed in schools. when it comes to how schooling looks in media like news I know more information about that but this class has shown me the different views and how the writer was trying to portray schooling. This class is important because it showed how we all have had different experiences when it comes to education but we have some similarities when it comes to what we have experienced in schooling.
ReplyDeleteMarissa- This class went over the purposes of schooling that I learned in a previous class. That previous class went more in depth with pedagogy, but this class focused on the pop culture aspect of education and how it’s represented. I never gave movies too much thought when it came to how differently schools were portrayed, but this class put it into perspective.
ReplyDeleteNoah - This class helped me see that a lot of what I thought about school came from habit and personal experience, not from really thinking about where those ideas came from. It opened my eyes to how much schools are shaped by society, power, and culture. Now I think about education less as a fixed system and more as something people create and can change.
ReplyDeleteLandon- this class has been very enlightening to me. Its hard to watch anything that involves school without noticing the tropes, but also where those tropes are coming from. This class has helped me contextualize a lot of me feelings regarding schooling. Its easy to understand a lot of common tropes regarding school in media but its interesting to see where they come from and see when they become problematic
ReplyDeleteThis class helped me understand how my ideas of schooling and education have been impacted and influenced by the popculture and media I have consumed throughout my life. As someone who wants to be a teacher this class has made me think about how future students perceptions on school is impacted by books, movies, etc.

DeleteJordy- This course made me realize that a lot of my ideas about school came from my own experiences and from the movies and shows I grew up watching. Once we started looking closely at all the media patterns and the discussions in our class notes, I saw how much schooling is shaped by things like race, class, and power, even when it doesn’t seem obvious. It changed how I think about the purpose of school—I used to see it mainly as academics, but now I see it as a place where people learn how to move through the world, not just pass classes.
ReplyDeleteVictoria - This course made me think more about where my ideas about school and education actually come from. ReplyDeleteJana - EDUS203 has made me rethink what schooling and education are truly for. Of course, my ideas about school were shaped by pop culture way before I ever questioned or truly thought about them. By learning and analyzing how pop culture shapes our expectations of teachers, students, and success, I definitely knew school was a cultural space, not just an academic one but I understand and have more context and depth to my understanding now. I definitely understand and can explain how school is influenced by larger social narratives that can either reinforce or challenge stereotypes, values, and power structures.
ReplyDeleteFinn - This course made me really think about how popculture not only affects education, but also how it affects how we think in general. It especially made me think about the media I consumed as a kid and how it made me feel about schooling in general. This class also helped me view media about school in a more critical view as well, which was really interesting to experience.
ReplyDeleteImani - This course simply reminded me that education is rooted in the world around us. The stories we read, the music we listen to, and the things we see online all shape how we learn. Education is a cultural process influenced by our everyday experiences, and its purpose here is to encourage others to engage with the world.
ReplyDeleteCheylsi- This course gave me a different perspective on schooling and the deeper meaning behind what makes up schooling. I grew up with a traditional view of schooling, just to teach the material and move along to the next level. But, this class showed me that most of my personality and who I am today came from the type of schooling I personally experienced. It changed my view of education, while still catering to what I learned from past schools.
ReplyDeleteMicayla- I feel that this course has changed my view on schooling portrayed in media. I did not realize how different school was viewed back in the 19s compared to how it is today. I also feel like this class made me more aware of the different dynamics in the movies and somehow in someway there are movies that a similar in plot but with different characters. Overall the course really just helped me look out side of a narrowed view to see the whole picture/concept.
ReplyDeleteKameron- I Feel this course has changed my outlook on the purpose of schooling and Education in our society today. It's defiantly unlooked and received low- funding opportunities. This Course has made me think more about the representation of schools throughout media and how it's portrayed completely different in real life.
ReplyDeleteBrandon- This course has taught me that their is an aspect of education in almost everything we listen to and watch. It has also taught me how as time has went on how school is portrayed differently in shows and movies and what was normal for them back then vs now.
ReplyDeleteUzziel- This class has been really eye-opening. I now notice school-related tropes in the media more easily and can understand their origins. It’s helped me make sense of my own feelings about schooling and recognize when these common portrayals cross into problematic territory.
ReplyDeleteJasper - I think this course has definitely affected the way I see education. I didn't realize that there was so much theory and thought that went into how someone could teach and educate people. I think especially seeing how education and individuality is portrayed in media was really eye-opening, as I didn't realize how many different archetypes and stereotypes there were in movies about school.
ReplyDeleteLizzie Dorsey - This course has absolutey effected the way I think about education and its purpose in society. I knew that the US school system is not set up in a way that offers equal oppurtunity to all, and it was very interesting and eye opening to explore this in depth. The discussion of the seperation of race and class in the US was another topic I found very interesting.
ReplyDeleteNathan Radler-This class has for sure changed the way I view education in the U.S, its made me think more about what is wrong with it and how we can fix it. I especially liked the movie watchign parts because that made me think about how movies reflect life.
