  1. NADIA STOLOFF- I resonated with Seli Mahray's song choice. I too am a big fan of The Weeknd (how can you not be) and also favor the song Baptized in Fear. That song title is so fantastic in my opinion. Being completely covered in fright that you struggle to live your life the way you want. Seli mentioned how in middle school, it resinated with them because of the fear of disappointment. I resonated with it because I had the fear of school shootings, which ruined my school life and increased my anxiety immensely, and I am positive that many many other students feel this same feeling of being baptized in fear during the school day.

  2. NADIA STOLOFF- Kailei Spencer's post was about Khalids song 8TEEN. When I was in my freshman year of high school, I was going through friendship drama, boy drama, and family drama. Every day I would walk home from school because I only lived a couple blocks away. Every single day I would listen to Khalid. I just really loved his voice and still do, but they resonated with me in a wild way where I felt like he understood me even though we had never met. He was writing songs about me, and hearing my life in song form was really cool. Some of my other favorite are Better and Saturday nights. They kind of described how I felt as a high school girl hanging out with friends and I have so much nostalgia from those songs.

    1. Erica Leia- I really liked Spencer's song choice 8TEEN has also been a coming of age song for me and I used to listen to it all the time in middle school. I feel like it does a great job at describing what its like to be in high school.

  3. Jordy Herreras- I really like the choice of Love Yourz—it’s one of those songs that hits on something real about comparison and contentment. J. Cole’s message about appreciating what you already have connects so well to the idea of social status we talked about in class. I like how you pointed out that even when people “upgrade,” they can still feel unsatisfied. It’s a good reminder that gratitude and perspective matter more than having mor

  4. Jordy Herrera- I really like how Kayla connected Smells Like Teen Spirit to modern teen experiences and academic pressure. It’s interesting how the song’s rebellion and angst from the ’90s still reflect what students deal with now it’s just in new ways like anxiety or social media. I agree that the lyrics capture that feeling of confusion and frustration that comes with growing up.

  5. Blanca Maldonado - After going over the document, I mostly resonated with Presley and Kailei Spencer. I really enjoyed reading their thoughts on 8TEEN by Khalid and Fifteen by Taylor Swift. I think the way they connected the songs to some type of universal experience of high school, and that feeling of discovering yourself and new friends. I also think the reflection on 8TEEN was very relatable. because the song came out around COVID-19 years which also made an impact on my teen years

  6. Brandon- When I was going through the songs, I saw Love Yourz by J.cole on there and it got my attention because I listen to a lot of J.cole. I like how the summary really hit on the gratitude that we should have when living life because that is definitely important to not let what we don't have affect what we have. A second one I liked was Baptized In Fear- The Weeknd and I liked how the summary mentioned being scared to fail in school and it always better when you learn to learn and not just to get good grades.

  7. Noah - When I was searching through all the different song choices, the two that stuck out to me the most were “Love Yours” by J Cole and “8teen” by Khalid. Overall both of these songs have a message that says to appreciate what you have and it reminds me that sometimes comparison can be the thief of happiness.

  8. Kennedy- I loved the song “The miseducation of lauryn hill” because a lot of people can relate to that songs let alone her album. it was well written. “The Spins by Mac miller” I love that songs because carefree and it is very upbeat. I hear that song every year when it is around graduation time.

  9. Victoria - As I looked through the lists, I related the most to "Fifteen" by Taylor Swift and "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House. For the song "Fifteen", I grew up listening to it as a kid, and this song gives the vibe of just being a teenager in high school. The relationships of dealing with friendships and boys, and navigating life in the early years of high school with unfamiliar people, are nerve-racking. However, you will be able to figure out things about yourself and find your people. Then for the next song "Don't Dream It's Over", it this just an uplifting and leaves you hopeful while listening to it. If something bad happens or things don't always go the way you expect, then don't give up and keep moving forward to something better, and it'll all come into place.

  10. Parker — I really love the song Love Yourz by J. Cole. I first heard it back in school, and the lyrics really stuck with me. Every time I listen to it, I’m reminded of how much that song means to me. The Spins by Mac Miller is another one of my favorites; it perfectly captures that feeling of high school nostalgia. I think both of these songs are great choices for this project.

  11. Landon- I LOVE Deftones so seeing Pink Maggit really resonated with me. I also chose a song from this album, which has mostly the same lyrics with some minor differences, in length and tone. As well I Hate School by Ruben the Understander is also a great choice. I also went with this one as its a perfect reflection of young kid angst and many of their attitudes towards education.

  12. 1. “Still Ill” – The Smiths
    Lyrics: https://youtu.be/b_3oFRcTNHo?si=cFGzzycAMF9rQZQt
I’ve loved this song since I was little, so it carries a strong sense of nostalgia for me. “Still Ill” was one of the first songs that made me stop and really think about its lyrics. In particular, when Morrissey sings, “Does the body rule the mind, or does the mind rule the body? I don’t know,” it made me reflect on the relationship between thought and action. I connected this lyric to our course discussions about behavior and control in educational and cultural contexts. In classrooms, for example, behavior is often a central focus, teachers and students alike question what drives certain actions. This lyric opens up an interesting debate: are our behaviors ruled by conscious thought (the mind) or by instinct and impulse (the body)? Even in some of the media we’ve watched this semester, we see students acting out or behaving unpredictably, raising that same question of whether these moments stem from mental intention or physical reaction.

  13. Hanna- Micayla's chosen song, All Falls Down By Kanye West. I haven't listen to the song myself but I can see myself in the lyrics you choose too. Being an art schools my parents were worried and so were many of my friends/family if I would make money out of it. At the end of the day it's something im so passionate for I couldn't imagine my life without it.

Marissa's chosen song, Abbey by Mitski, is one of my favorite songs from her lush album. The song has such emotion behind it and for me trying to figure out what I wanted to do college and choosing one over another caused some unfulfilled desire. By that I mean I had choose between two majors, in the future I plan to come back for grad school but I feel like I'm still missing out of some part by not choosing that path.

  14. Imani - Nathan's song choice, School Daze by J. Cole, is a great example of how we as college students begin to reminisce. Sometimes, balancing our academic, work, and social lives become so overwhelming to the point where we start to wish we were kids again. We long for that time in our lives when life felt simpler and responsibilities were fewer.
I also really enjoyed Nadra's song choice, PMS by Doechii. I liked how she explained her reasoning behind selecting this particular track. This song is extremely empowering, especially for women.

  15. Seniece - I resonate with Micayla’s song, which is All Falls Down by Kanye West, and the lyric she chose was “She has no idea what she doin’ in college. The major that she majored in don’t make no money, but she won’t drop out , her parents’ll look at her funny.” I major in business administration, which is a really good major to have and I have a plan but sometimes I think my plan is too good to be true. If I move in the correct direction while and after school I should be fine but there's always a thought in the back of my head saying “what if”.

  16. One of the songs I had chosen for my annotated playlist is 'Time to Pretend' by MGMT. The song's lyrics begin by speaking about living a carefree and frivolous life, detached from the typical responsibilities of adult life. But after the first chorus, they begin to lament about the life they previously had. Specifically, speaking about the end of childhood and grappling with the new chapter of their life, which was once something they celebrated.

This song was incredibly impactful and pertinent to the feelings many people experience when leaving high school and entering college and/or adulthood. The independence and desire for more is finally given to us, and we miss the stability of home and the guidance our loved ones gave us. This desire for more, yet yearning for childhood, can cause a lot of internal turmoil and is something that many people experience.

  17. Kenzie – I really liked the song choice of Erica’s. The Spins by Mac Miller. I personally connect the song to my senior year of high school because a lot of people would use the lyric “oh yeah I just graduated high school” on their social media posts. I also like the song choice of Kennedy. Young, Wild & Free by Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Mars. In all honestly I’m a big fan of pretty much any song Bruno Mars is in, and this song is just very catchy.

  18. Chris - I resonated with the song Brandon provided, "The Greatest" by Rod Wave, since it is very similar to the idea of one of the songs I added to my playlist, "Hardknock" by Joey Bada$$. I also enjoyed listenting to this song and the past and it wides the same wave of the fact that while school can be important, it isn't necessesarily the all true answer. Your future relies on you and sometimes you will need to search in different places to find whats true to you. I also connected with Jana's song, "I Wonder" by Kanye West. This song had me thinking in school about wha path I'll end up taking when it came to college. It gave me hope and excitement to see who I would become in a new environment.

  19. Finn - I really liked Brandon’s song choice, the greatest by rod wave. I don’t listen to his music but I really liked the lyrics he chose to present. I think it’s very important to talk about how if you don’t make connections or really fight for your dream, you’ll spend all of your school years and after doing something you don’t really want to do and something you are overqualified for. I also liked Hanna’s choice, Best Tears by the happy fits. I listen to them a lot and really enjoy their music, and I like how Hanna connected this song to the education system, as I had never really thought of that before.

I was very insterested in "Jeremy", Jasper's song choice. I did not know about the event the song was based on, even though I had heard the song before. It is an interesting reaction to the event, and I wonder if the song would have been written today after such an increase of violence in schools.
I also liked Nadra's choice of the song "PMS" by Doechii. The song is originally about her experiences working in the music industry and how she is percieved, and relating it to school is an interesting interpretation. Feeling the need to constantly be seen as put together and not feeling able to express yourself or your issues properly is something many students can relate to. I also really like Doechii, so this was also a new way to interpret a song I was already pretty familiar with.

  21. Nadra- I really liked Micayla's song choice and lyrics, specifically "All Falls Down" by Kanye West. During my first round of college, I majored in Sociology and minored in Women, Gender, and Sexuality studies. As a first-generation college student, my mom and older siblings were upset that I chose this major because, to them, the only reputable jobs are those of a doctor, engineer, or lawyer. They saw no way I could be financially successful by majoring in sociology. However, I stuck with my choice to major in sociology because it's what I love. I have no regrets about majoring in sociology because it shaped me into the person I am today.

  22. Nadra- Victoria's song "Graduation (Friends Forever)" by Vitamin C was a great way for me to realize how far I've come. My first semester out of school, I was so stressed about how I was going to 'adult', I spent all my life being a student. Although I had worked since about my sophomore year of high school, I was never fully responsible for my own bills. After leaving school, I had no choice but to jump into adulthood. Returning to school with more adult responsibilities is a weird way for me to realize I am now living the same thing I was scared about at 22.

Jasper's song Jeremy is a song I already knew the sad story behind and I have heard it a million times before because my dad likes Pearl Jam.
Erica's song, The Spins by Mac Miller is a song I listened to over and over again the summer after my senior year of high school, and seeing it on the list of songs actually made me really happy. The lyric "i just graduated high school" was a lyric that I would scream at the top of my lungs with my friends.

  24. Micayla- I feel like the Brandon's song the greatest by rod wave really shows the reality of going to high school. I feel like you can't really do that much with a high school diploma except labor or like service. I feel like this is a lot of peoples realities.
Jana's job also kinda sparked a thought in me. Her song is I wonder by Kanye West and in the lyrics it says "Trade it all for a husband and some kids, you wonder what it all really mean? You wonder if you'll ever find your dreams? (To find your dreams come true) I feel like this relates to people just giving up on their dreams for something stable but I don't wanna end up having to pick between the two. I think you can do both.

  25. Jasper - Micayla's choice "All Falls Down" by Kanye West is a song I know very well and that I used to listen to a lot at a young age. It's the only Kanye song I still have on any playlist, and I know the entire song by heart.
Jordy's song "Killing in the Name" by RATM is another song I used to listen to a lot, although I listened to it later in life than the previous song. A lot of my music taste in high school was shaped by and stemmed from RATM.

  26. Jana - going through the google doc, 8TEEN and Love Yourz were immediate standouts for me as those were my first two concerts ever (Khalid and J.Cole). They remind me of a time where I was so young (and naive) to want to grow up and see what the future had in store; of course I love the life I have now but man, what I would do to go back and just enjoy those days a little bit more. Another one that stood out to me was Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana, now growing up I wasn't introduced to music like this until well into my teen years just because of the environment I was raised in and idk it just unlocked a certain connection for music that I hadn't had before. The new and completely different genre (that seemed so out of reach and not for me previously) was now something I couldn't not listen to and made me realize not everything is what it seems.
