Kennedy - I have talked about individualism in my Critical Thinking class. Since it is the beginning of the class we talked about how to identify if an argument is valid or not. Individualism when it comes to critical thinking has to do with forming one's own conclusion based on reason and evidence. It is seen as a good thing because it helps us with thinking critically.
ReplyDeleteErica- I've never gone into the specifics of individualism in any of my classes but I have had teachers encourage us to come up with our own thoughts and opinions. Especially in my UNIV classes. My teacher in UNIV 111-112 encouraged us to disagree with one another and even disagree with him. In my current UNIV 200 class my professor puts an emphasis on individuality. He creates assignments that motivate his students to use their own voice and include their own interests. I think he does this so it is easier to spot if we were using AI because the assignments are supposed to be personal. I believe that these forms of teaching are beneficial because it encourages students to come up with their own thoughts and opinions and dig deeper into the ones they already have.
ReplyDeleteKameron- The last class I had discussed Individualism with is in my UNIV-111 class I took Freshman year. In this chapter we discuss the positive and negative ideals of Individualism and the effect it has on our society. Originally, I think for the definition of Individualism is to be a philosophical and social perspective that emphasizes the worth of an individual. It prioritizes the rights, goals, and desires of a person over the interests of a group, state, or society. This topic I feel has become a major impact on people to become more self-reliant and achieve personal freedom.
ReplyDeleteSeniece - In my Intro to African American studies class we discussed individualism when comparing different cultural values. It was mostly seen as a positive thing, especially in terms of promoting independence and personal freedom. However, we also talked about how too much individualism can lead to social isolation and a lack of community support. Reading the chapter made me think more about how balance is important and we need both independence and connection with others.
ReplyDeleteIn my Focused Inquiry class, the professor encourages us to discuss about our own personal experiences and dive into our individual selves to help for our own writing. It reminds me of journaling in a way, because you are reflecting on your own thoughts, opinions, and actions, which can help understand other peoples perspectives. If you know yourself more as an individual, it can help understand others and know what to disagree with and what to agree with to form your own opinions.

DeleteIn my human spirituality class, I've recently discussed individualism in a moral stance. Everyone has their own beliefs, and due to their background and the way they grew up, people's opinions and perspectives can be different. With these factors, many people can have religion brought into their lives very differently, whether it's being born into a religious family and having it brought on to you by an early age, or exploring it yourself. I don't think it's a bad thing to have faith in something.
ReplyDeleteHanna- I don't quite remember a class I took that discussed the topic of Individualism. If anything when I think about it, as individuals we have different ways of life, different cultures, and different interest. I don't find it a bad thing, its what makes society so rich because no one is the same. Although we can still find people similar to ourselves. Reading through Bulman's Ch 2 it was really interesting to read on how rooted it is in American culture, The American Frontier, and Democracy, etc.
ReplyDeleteImani - In my Focused Inquiry class we discussed individualism when it came to writing about personal freedom and self expression. I look this as a good thing because it encourages independent thinking and staying true to yourself.
ReplyDeleteLandon- I have not had a class that has talked about individualism. To me its a very interesting topic, as what defines being yourself? Everything around us defines who we are. I believe that someone who follows every single trend is expressing themselves in a similar manner to someone who trys not to follow any trend. I think there is a difference when people try to be more themsleves and stand out more but at the end of the day we all our expressing ourselves, sometimes not in the same way as others.
ReplyDeleteJordy- In Chapter 2, individualism is a key theme in high school films. I think individualism is great for sure, and I see it in my writing classes too, where we’re encouraged to develop our own voice and ideas. But the movies show that there are consequences when there isn’t a limit. Characters who push too far against social norms sometimes face social, academic, or personal problems, which shows that society still expects some level of conformity.
ReplyDeleteFinn - I talked a lot about individualism in my social work class in freshman year second semester. The class was specifically about minority justice within social work, so it was very important to all of the topics we discussed and was applied constantly. In that class, it was seen as an incredibly positive thing and we discussed a lot about our different perspectives on certain topics because of individualism relating to our race, our gender, our sexuality, or religion, and how we openly present ourselves. While we spoke a lot about individualism as a positive thing, we also spoke a lot about the consequences and stereotypes that are often put on you when you are individual and different than the majority of others.
ReplyDeleteParker - I believe we went over individualism in my UNIV class when I was a freshman. I do think it is hard to be individualistic in the present day because of how much information we take in from various different sources. I think being individualistic is a positive skill, as it brings in many new ideas. This is because everyone has their own experiences and comes from their own different backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteBrandon- I have not had a class that has talked about individualism yet. I think you sometimes can't tell whos being themselves fully because people fall in line with social norms, but on the other hand it is cool to see people express and be themselves with no fear.
ReplyDeleteChristian- In highschool, my most recent english teacher often mentioned individualism to the class. He emphazised it heavily so we could all create our own unique pieces of writing. He most certainly viewed individualism as a postive idea.
ReplyDeleteMarissa- I don’t think I’ve talked about individualism in any of my previous classes, so this was an interesting read. Prior to this reading, I believed individualism consisted of personality traits or quirks that made you unique and different. Bulman opened my eyes to the capitalistic aspect of it. Individualism is needed in society as our technology and humanity, as a whole, expands. Everyone has different jobs and works together to keep things running, in theory.
ReplyDeleteDakota - In my Black Theatre class, we discussed individualism as a theme in the play Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, how one of the characters prefers to have his own ideas about music and artistic expression, while Ma's band plays together and collaborates heavily. It wasn't seen as either a largely "good" or "bad" thing, because the play suggests that there is both a time and a place to be an individual with your own ideas, and sometimes to make the best art possible, one needs to set aside one's individuality and collaborate.
ReplyDeleteKenzie- Individualism has been discussed in my class called “The Meaning of Dress.” It was brought up in a class discussion where I had to categorize myself, my family, friends, classmates, and other people in my community if they fit into an individualist or a collectivist. I think that individualism is seen as good in terms of fashion because clothing/fashion is how one expresses themselves. The one way it could largely be seen as bad is when it comes to cultural appropriation.
ReplyDeleteCheylsi -The only class that i remember discussing individualism was my human sexuality class that i took last semester. We discussed the importance of being your own person, no matter what that looks like, and being set apart can make you stand out. In this class it was a very positive topic, and i remember specifically an online quiz we had to take for the topic which was very interesting once she posted the results. It was refreshing to know that everyone was a little different even if it wasn't it huge ways.
ReplyDeleteVictoria - In my other classes, we would discuss individualism to an extent. I know individualism is about each person having the right to make their own choices. I think it is seen as a good thing because people have their freedom and their own voice. It is valued and encouraged to pursue their own goals and define success for themselves.
ReplyDeleteNathan- In my Univ 112 class was discussed individualism in context to our writing and it was spoken about positively. I understand individualism to be about finding your own way of expressing your thoughts and understanding texts and things in your own way.
ReplyDeleteNoah - I would say the only class that individualism has came up in would be my UNIV classes from last year, especially in our writing. Individualism is a good thing because it sets you apart from the crowd, helping you express your own values. United States culture celebrates individualism allowing people to pursue their own individual goals.
ReplyDeleteLee- We have talked about individualism in my Story for Impact class, where personal stories and morals are discussed. We are encouraged to listen to each other, and find commonalities within shared experiences. These shared experiences can often help create stronger bonds with one another, ultimately helping us understand what those outside of ourselves have gone through. Individualism can be both a stepping-off point to finding community, but it can also be a hindrance in personal growth; when all of one’s peers have had similar, if not, the same experiences, then there is little room for expanding oneself. Vacuums push away from ‘the other,’ which can lead to even greater social divisions. If you aren’t like me, how can I trust you?
ReplyDeleteMicayla- The only class that I have talked about individualism would be in my UNIV classes last year. I feel like it's a good thing, my professor often would encourage each other to give our own opinion and disagree with each other if it was needed. I feel like individualism is important because a lot of good things come out of discussions where people have different options.
ReplyDeleteKaila- The topic of individualism has been brought up in almost every education class I have taken. Specifically the individualism of students and indivisualized learning. Individualism in students is a part of their personal autonomy, goals, achievements, and indepence. Each students brings a different background to the classroom, individual learning is an educational approach that personalizes the learning experience to the student so that they are learning in a way that is best for them.
ReplyDeleteJana - I’ve learned about individualism in GSWS class as it was discussed as a guiding force for autonomy and self-determination, transcending gender roles, and helping legitimize different goals and identities. I also took away that individualist values encourage creativity and resistance to norms while also promoting greater equality for women and gender minorities. But, to use caution with the overuse of individualism cause it can undermine community support.
ReplyDeleteIn my sociology of race, sociology of gender, and WGSX classes, we often discussed individualism. We talked about what and how individualism looks like, and how it varies by race, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, etc. Depending on how you present yourself can determine whether you see individualism as a good thing, because your form of individualism may not fit into the US's idea of it, thus causing ostracization.

ReplyDeleteJasper - Some of the courses I have had where individualism is discussed would be my Mass Communications 101 course and my Cinema 200 course. In Masc101, we talk about what it means to be an individual, as well as how does individual though develop/is it ever actually original. In my Cine200 course, whenever we talk about individualism, it is largely our professors making sure we know to be our own person and not let others boss us around. I think that lesson is especially important for a cinema course because being able to stand your ground and fight for what you want is a large part of being a filmmaker. In both courses individualism is seen as a good thing.
